In the Shadows (1987) was inspired by a short film entitled The Cry by Amy Kravitz. The film consists of an ominous enveloping darkness upon which emerging and dissipating flashes of light are contrasted. Within these brief flashes, vague impressions of forms are discerned. The music, composed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Experimental Music Studio, aurally imitates the light images of the film. Consequently, the flashes of music phase in and out with one another and move about spatially.
